1 〔身体〕 one's body [person]. [⇒身に付く, 身に付ける]

2 〔自身〕 (one's) self; oneself. [⇒身を引く]

●身になる 〔役に立つ〕 do one good; be beneficial

・本で読んだ知識が身になっている. The knowledge I got from books has stood me in good stead.

・身に覚えのないことだ. I have no personal knowledge of that.

・彼女の話は身につまされる. Her story struck a chord of sympathy in me.

●身の安全を図る make sure one is safe

3 〔身分〕 status; 〔立場〕 position.

●それは女の身で楽なことではない. For a woman that is not an easy thing to do.

●身に余る光栄です. It is an honor greater than I deserve.

・私の身にもなってくれ. Think how you'd feel if you were in my place.

・親の身になって考えれば自ずと結論は出る. If you put yourself in the place of her parents, the answer would be self-evident.

●身の程を知らない ⇒みのほど.

●彼もとうとう身を固めた(＝結婚した)ようだ. It seems he's finally married and settled down.

●彼は小さい子供を 5 人も抱えている身だ. He has five small children of his depending on him.

・私はまだ親がかりの身だ. I'm still dependent on my parents.

4 〔集中する気持ち〕 feeling; heart.

●仕事に身が入らない. My heart isn't in the work.

●身を入れて取り組む apply oneself sincerely 《to resolving a problem》; do sth with all one's heart.

5 〔食材の肉の部分〕 meat.

●この魚料理は身が骨から離れにくい. With this fish dish it's hard to separate the flesh from the bone.

・このハマグリは身が小さい[硬い]. The meat of these clams is small [tough].

●(魚の)身をほぐす remove the (fish) flesh from the bone.

6 〔容器の〕 the body 《of a container》.

●この箱は身が深い. This box is deep [has depth].

●そう言っては身もふたもない. You are altogether too outspoken. | That's being much too frank.

身に付く 1 〔体得される〕 be mastered; 〔そなわる〕 attach.

●アメリカ式の考え方はなかなか身につかない. The American way of thinking hasn't grown on me.

・彼は欧米式のマナーが身についている. Western manners are second nature to him.

・彼女の品格は身についたものだ. She possesses a grace all her own.

2 〔所有となる〕 retain.

●賭け事で儲けた金は身につかないものだ. Gambling winnings are soon gone.

身に付ける 1 〔着用する〕 wear; 〔所持する〕 carry 《a weapon》.

2 〔習得する〕 learn; acquire; be equipped 《with…》; be possessed 《of…》.

身を引く 〔地位を離れる〕 resign; 〔立場を放棄する〕 abandon.

・創業者は第一線から身を引いた. The founder stepped down from the corporate leadership.
